Diabetic and Family Camp

2026 Camp Dates

Family Camp: Tuesday June 23 – Friday June 26

Solo Camp: Sunday June 28 – Thursday July 2

Lions Camp Merrick offers two types of diabetic camp experiences: Solo Camp and Family Camp.  In both experiences, the memories and friendships made last a lifetime.

Solo Camp:

This week is specifically designed for campers between the ages of 6-16 who have been diagnosed with type 1 or 2 diabetes.  Campers will enjoy meeting new peers, learning about their diabetes and practice diabetes care skills.  In a beautiful, natural setting, the campers will have fun canoeing, learning archery, swimming in the newly renovated pool, playing on the blow-up waterslide and slip ‘n slide, and many other activities, arts and crafts and games.  The skills taught at camp aim to empower campers, foster independence, all while having fun and making lifelong friendships.

Camp directors, counselors, and nurses are on site during the entire camp experience.  Counselors stay in the cabins with the campers.

Family Camp:

This week is for children between the ages of 5-16 who have been diagnosed with type 1 or 2 diabetes AND up to 3 family members (maximum 4 total). The campers participate in similar activities as in the “solo” camp, but have the comfort of their families close by.

Camp directors, counselors, and nurses are all on site during the camp.  Counselors stay in the cabins with the campers.  Any siblings ages 5-16 who attend will share activities and lodging with the diabetic campers.  Adults stay in separate adult only cabins and will participate in their own social activities. They will have the opportunity to learn more about diabetes, how to help care for their child, and how to empower their diabetic child to be more independent.  Everyone comes together at scheduled times for certain activities and meals.

I don't know where I would be without camp. Camp has provided me a safe place to be myself, learn, and embrace T1D. For one week out of the year I am living in a world where T1D is understood and normal, and camp makes that possible. LCM pulled me out of burnout and is by far my favorite place to be.
